IDEAS AND RESOURCES FOR KNOWING GOD
from Jenn
Life is always going to be unpredictable and crazy, but it *is* possible to carve out time to study the Bible and to be gentle with ourselves as we intentionally study the Word. Progress is key here —not perfection. For our ladies especially, try softer, give yourself grace, and take it one day at a time.
Do you want to study God’s word and embrace your identity as a student of the word (a theologian!), but feel unsure where or how to change or begin? Here are some places you can start or go deeper!
1. Approach God’s word asking first, “What does this tell me about who God is?
2. Train yourself in how to study. Don’t put a filter between you and God. Devotionals and thoughts of others can get in the way of what God is saying. Stay focused on God just as you would when conversing with a person. Remember God already knows everything on your heart, and he loves you right where you’re at. Nothing is hidden and all is forgiven.
  • Jen Wilkin’s book, Women of the Word, is an amazing resource. She succinctly outlines how to start your practice of study.
3. Let go of your own ideas and perceptions (and those the world has placed around you). Don’t look to Instagram or your friends for what this time should look like. Your study discipline is a rhythm that is unique as the beautiful you God created.
4. Take the time that you have that day. Things in this world are rarely consistent. Figure out a few options that work. Plan out a few ideas of what Bible reading looks like at different times of day. Have a few pre-made decisions, so it’s easy to pick it up multiple times during the day.
5. For context, supplement Bible reading with podcasts or videos from other theologians who make their living studying the Bible and its context. This is different from sermons—pastors are called to edify and evangelize. We want to search out those who will give us historical and cultural context and teaching how to approach the Bible.
A few Resources to get you started:
  • the Bible Project (a team who is creating free animated videos about the Bible, tracing the themes and showcasing the literary art of the Scriptures)
  • AfterClass (a group of 3 Biblical scholars and Christan college professors who help share how they read and interpret the Bible)
  • RightNow Media: If your church has a membership with RightNow media, there are commentaries for each book of the Bible, as well as video content too.
  • Ask your pastor or trusted friend for other ideas. Those who love to study God’s word are always excited to find another Christian who is ready to go deeper.
6. Do it in community: Find your strand of 3! Use an app like YouVersion to coordinate your reading and find a place to comment and share your thoughts, questions and what encouraged you.
7. Keep going! Give yourself grace when you forget or choose not to. Allow yourself times of sickness and periods where life gets busy, and then return.
